Trust
Last updated 22 October 2026
Straight answers to what people ask about a free notepad before they trust it with their notes. bpad is made and run by one person: me, Matias Barragan. The legal versions are the Privacy Policy and the Terms.
How bpad makes money
It doesn't yet. bpad is free while I build it, and running it costs me money. I plan an optional paid plan later for extras. If anything you use for free today ever moves into it, I will say so well in advance, and you can always export everything you wrote. There are no ads, and I never sell your notes or use them to train anything.
Where your notes are kept
Without an account, your notes live only in this browser, in its local storage. They are never sent to me, and clearing the browser's site data deletes them. Safari also clears it after seven days without a visit unless bpad is added to the home screen, so bpad offers to install as an app or to export everything.
With an account, your notes are kept in bpad's database (Neon, in Singapore), and a copy of each note you open stays on that device so it also works offline. Images, files and voice memos you add are kept in Vercel Blob at long random addresses. Accounts are handled by Clerk. Live editing runs through Cloudflare. The typeface and the spelling dictionaries come from bpad.cc itself, so loading bpad asks no other company for anything, and there are no analytics or tracking cookies.
No AI inside your notes
No AI inside your notes. Connect your own Claude if you want. The Claude connection is opt-in and off unless you connect it yourself: you add bpad to Claude, sign in and approve it. Only then can Claude list, read, create, change and delete your own notes, and only when you ask it to. While it rewrites a note you have open, the note shows that Claude is editing, and bpad keeps the text from before the rewrite in Version history. You can disconnect it in Claude at any time.
Who can see a shared note
Only you, until you share it. A share link opens the note for anyone who has it, as view only or with editing, and each link is 48 random characters, so it can't be guessed. You can also invite people by name. You can change or revoke links and remove people at any time, and they lose access at once. Shared pages ask search engines not to list them. Anyone viewing a shared note can report it, and I can switch off a link that is used for spam or harm. Only accounts can share; notes written without one never leave the browser.
Mistakes are recoverable
For notes in an account, bpad keeps a version every few minutes while you write and before big changes, for 30 days. Version history, in the note's info card, lets you look back and restore one, and restoring keeps your current text as a version too, so nothing is lost. Notes written without an account have no version history yet, because they live in the browser's small storage.
Taking everything with you
Export any note as .pdf, .md, .txt or .docx, or every note at once as one Markdown file (Export, then All notes). Delete a note and it is gone for you and everyone it was shared with. Delete account, at the bottom of Settings, erases your notes, the files in them, your comments, your sharing and notifications, and then your account. Questions go to mati@barragan.com.py.
Is it open source?
Not today. If that changes, this page will say so.
